Prophesied long ago, before the birth of Jesus, the Sovereign Lord told Ezekiel that He would come to seek out and save his people.
Ezekiel wrote down what the Lord had told him in Ezekiel 34. Beginning in Ezekiel 34:11, “For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will search and find my sheep. I will be like a shepherd looking for his scattered flock. I will find my sheep and rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on that dark and cloudy day.
In verses 13-16, the Lord continues by saying, “I will bring them back home and will feed them on the mountains and by the rivers and in all the places where people live. I will give them good pastureland. There, they will lie down in pleasant places and feed in the lush pastures of the hills. I myself will tend my sheep and give them a place to lie down in peace, says the Sovereign LORD. I will search for my lost ones who strayed away, and I will bring them safely home again.
As the Lord ends his message to Ezekiel in verses 23 and 24, he says that when his people are found, he “will set over them one shepherd, my servant David. He will feed them and be a shepherd to them. And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David will be a prince among my people. I, the LORD, have spoken! (Ezekiel 34:11-24 NLT).
God was not speaking of David, the king, but a king that would come from the family lineage of King David, which is Jesus Christ himself. As a baby, I came to this earth and grew up to live a perfect life. To find himself rejected by those who were his own. He lived to die a death that freed us from sin. If his own accepts his gift of salvation, the Lord will bring them home and begin to shepherd their lives.
As Ezekiel looked forward to that day, so did Isaiah the prophet.
Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 25:9, “In that day the people will proclaim, “This is our God! We trusted in him, and he saved us! This is the LORD, in whom we trusted. Let us rejoice in the salvation he brings!”
Today is the day that both Ezekiel and Isaiah were looking forward to. They believed the Lord and trusted his word, and his word came to pass when Jesus was born on this earth.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, brings salvation to those who believe in him. So, let us rejoice in being found and the salvation that he brings. Amen.
