In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, and soon after, God created Adam and Eve in His image. Adam and Eve were blameless before God. They had no shame. They walked with God with integrity and in righteousness. Adam and Eve walked before God in obedience to Him.
Then the serpent, the devil came to Eve.
Genesis 3:1-8 NLT: “The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day, he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
“Of course, we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”
“You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”
As Eve processed this thought, the fruit became more appealing to her, and she ate the fruit and gave some to Adam, who was with her.
Adam and Eve, at that moment, ate the fruit and became disobedient to God by sinning against him. Adam and Eve were instantly able to see the good and evil in the world but lost their perfect vision of the God who had created them. In their shame, they went and hid themselves and walked away from God. Thinking that God would not be able to find them, even though they knew that God would take a walk through the Garden, just as He did before.
Adam and Eve decided to walk their own way instead of choosing to walk with God.
Stop and think about what it was like for Adam and Eve to walk with the Lord in perfect harmony and fellowship with the one who had created them.
Then, in one moment, during one act of disobedience towards God, Adam and Eve no longer physically walked with the Lord. Disobeying God in His eyes is when we sin against him. Sin is the term we use to speak of being disobedient toward God.
God, in his Holiness, can’t tolerate sin. Sin is not a part of his nature, so when Adam and Eve sinned against God, not only did Adam and Eve not walk with God anymore, but God would not walk on the earth with humanity anymore because of sin. That was until His Son Jesus Christ walked on the earth; he created to redeem those who choose to place their faith in him.
God wanted Adam and Eve to walk with Him obediently, but they walked away. God’s desire for you is to also walk with him.
My new book, “Strengthen Your Walk: Lessons from Paul’s Walk with the Lord, “was recently released. This first book in the “Strengthening Your Walk series” focuses on Paul’s life found in Scripture. In this book, I address how the Apostle Paul walked with the Lord. Paul lived a full life with so much content that no one could cover it all. My attempt was just the tip of the iceberg of what insights we can get from his life. In the next few podcast episodes, I will cover some of the content I wrote within the book. So, I hope you will stick around and check out the latest Abiding in the Faith Podcast installments.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at the church of Colossae and told them in Colossians 1:10: “to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
What does it mean to “Walk with God?”
I answer this question by looking at various scriptures and individuals who have chosen to walk with God, begining with Noah. Check out the podcast attached to hear more.
