Each year for the last few years, instead of a New Year’s resolution, I decided to have a theme for the year that I would focus on. The themes were always based on a Bible verse, and my focus for the year would be to grow with the Lord in that area of my life.
Last year, the theme was based on Exodus 33:13 ESV, where Moses said to God, “If I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you.” My desire in 2024 was to know God more. Thankfully, I have learned more about God and his ways and have applied them to my life.
This year, the theme I chose is based on Colossians 3:16. Where Paul tells the church at Colossae to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
This verse is contained within chapter 3, where Paul conveys to the church the importance of putting on the new self. As a new creation in Jesus Christ, we must put on the new self, cloaked in the Son of God. As I read the text, I see four categories that must occur as a follower of Jesus.
- We are to seek the things that are above. (Vs.1,2)
- To put to death what is earthly within you. (Vs. 5-10)
- To put on the supernatural graces that are given to us through Christ. (Vs. 12-15)
- Then, finally, to let the word of Christ dwell within you. (Vs. 16-17)
As I read Colossians 3:16, I had to ask myself a question. Does the word of Christ dwell richly within me? I know the word of Christ dwells with me, but is the word of God really at home in my heart?
Does the word of God dominate my decisions, thinking, and reacting to situations and people around me? Does Scripture permeate every aspect of my life?
When I am candid with myself, I will admit that I have a lot of growth to do in this area. My desire for 2025 is to allow the word of God to grow roots deeply in my heart, making my heart a dwelling place.
Throughout the year, the theme will be strengthening our walk with Jesus Christ by growing in the word of God. In 2025, the theme of Abiding in the Faith Ministries will be the same.
Will you join me this year by growing in the word of God? Trust me, God will deposit the riches contained within the word of God into your lives.
Martin Luther said, “The Bible is a remarkable fountain: the more one draws and drinks of it, the more it stimulates thirst.” ~ Martin Luther.
Let’s stimulate the thirst to be in God’s word in 2025!
