Psalm 119: Enlarge My Heart

In today’s portion of Psalm 119, we seek to strengthen our walk with Jesus by examining areas of the psalmist’s heart as he desires God to enlarge his heart. The Psalmist seeks God for revival, honesty, strength, and faithfulness, and concludes with a heart that continually returns to God.

A heart that seeks revival.

Psalm 119:25: “My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word!”

The psalmist knows that God is the author of life. God is the one who not only gives life but can also revive it. A heart that requires revival was alive in Christ, to begin with!

A heart that is honest with God.

Psalm 119:26: “When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes!”

As the psalmist confesses his ways to God, God answered. In his prayer, he was honest and venerable to the Lord, asking God to revive his life.

A heart that seeks to be strengthened by God.

Psalm 119:27-28: “Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!”

How? We ask God to help us understand his ways and methods while meditating on God’s response from Scripture, just as the psalmist did. Then, make applications for your life and practice them.

A heart that seeks the path of faithfulness.

Psalm 119: 29-31: “Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. I cling to your testimonies, O Lord; Let me not be put to shame!

A heart that continuously goes back to God.

Psalm 119:32: “I will run in the way of your commandments
When you enlarge my heart!”

The psalmist uses words that reflect his energetic response to God’s word. He’s asking God to enlarge my heart in these areas. Some areas of our hearts need to be enlarged by God. Perhaps it’s being able to express empathy towards others. Maybe you need to ask God to enlarge your heart in the area of forgiveness or other areas of your heart that have been closed off to God.
