Today’s study is a recap of the book of Hebrews. Pastor Jason points out why Jesus is our great shepherd and the missing puzzle piece that completes the picture.

We have concluded the Book of Hebrews, and like every good work, the letter ends with the subject that made the letter.

The author writes in Hebrews 13:20-21 ESV: “Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus Christ, the great shepherd, is whom the author focuses on throughout the entire letter. Jesus is the one who completes the picture of the Old Testament and is the focus of the New Testament. As we conclude this study, we will spend the next few minutes on why Jesus is our great shepherd as we reflect on our analysis of Hebrews.

  • Jesus is our great shepherd because God speaks to us through him.  (Hebrews 1: 2-3)
  • Jesus is the great shepherd because we can secure our lives with him.

The truth of the Gospel is hope for a person’s life, and Hebrews 6:19 says, “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.”

  • Jesus is our great shepherd because He offers salvation.
  • Jesus is our great shepherd because we can draw near to him.

Hebrews 7:19: “For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope through which we draw near to God.

  • Jesus is our great shepherd because he is relational.
  • Jesus is our great shepherd because he purifies us

Hebrews 9:13-14: For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

  • Jesus is our great shepherd because he offers complete forgiveness.

Hebrews 10: 17-18: God says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds. “And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.

  • Jesus is our great shepherd because he equips us.

Hebrews 13:20-21: Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
